Compte de Nesselrode

Compte de Nesselrode
An 1861 European cultivar with a tangled transatlantic identity — the name was erroneously applied in America to a different Magnolia Gardens variety.
First listed by Auguste van Geert in 1861 without description, then described in his 1863–1864 catalogue as 'very large, magnificent pink.' Linden's 1871–1872 catalogue adds 'tipped and edged white.' The cultivar's transatlantic journey created nomenclatural confusion: imported by McIlhenny from Seidel to the USA about 1937, the name was erroneously applied in America to a different variety originating at Magnolia Gardens — a case study in how cultivar names became entangled between European and American collections. Listed locally as 'Compte de Nesselrode' and registered as 'Comte de Nesselrode.' Source: International Camellia Register.
