Etoille Fontaine

Etoille Fontaine
A nineteenth-century Belgian japonica whose crimson-scarlet petals are individually ribboned with metallic white — illustrated in L'Illustration Horticole under 'Stella Polare.'
Registered in 1861, this nineteenth-century European japonica is distinguished by its remarkable petal patterning — each petal carrying a metallic white ribbon down the center over crimson scarlet (or carmine pink, depending on the source). Illustrated in L'Illustration Horticole (vol. 13, 1866) under the Italian name 'Stella Polare,' with clear bands of white visible in the plate. Acquired by Jean Verschaffelt from Henderson in a sale in October 1861. Listed locally as 'Etoille Fontaine (Savannah).' Source: International Camellia Register.
