Originated by Vernon E. Howell of Lucedale, Mississippi, this nine-year seedling produces red semi-double flowers with sixty-three petals — an unusually high count for a semi-double form, approaching the density typically associated with formal doubles. Yellow anthers and yellow filaments provide contrast. Growth is upright, dense, and vigorous with dark green leaves. Listed locally as 'Vernon Howell' and registered as 'Vernon E. Howell.'
