Originated by Harvey Short of Ramona, California, this cultivar features striking three-color blooms: pink and vivid red striping on off-white ground, measuring thirteen centimeters across in semi-peony form with upright petals and deep golden stamens. Featured on the front cover of the 1966 SCCS Camellia Review. Growth is vigorous and open, flowering mid-season to late. Has produced a solid red sport, 'Gay Chieftain Red.'
