Dakigura

Dakigura
One of the oldest continuously cultivated camellias — registered in 1788, with cardinal red mottled white peony blooms and a lineage spanning over two centuries.
With a registration date of 1788, this is among the oldest named camellia cultivars still in cultivation — a living relic spanning over two centuries of horticultural history. First documented in Itō Tokuemon's 1788 Tsubaki Hanagata Tsuki Obo'echō, the cardinal red mottled white peony-form flowers bloom remarkably early in the season and are medium-sized at 9–11 cm. Two distinct cultivars appear under this name in Kasuya's 1859 listing. Growth is slow with large, dull green foliage. Listed locally as 'Dakigura' and registered as 'Daikagura.'
