c. Nittadissima
Imported directly from Japan by Dr. Siebold in 1829 — among the first camellias to reach Europe from Japan, with sixty-five white tiered formal double petals.
Among the earliest camellias imported directly from Japan to Europe, arriving in Holland via Dr. Siebold in 1829 along with 'Donckelaeri' (Masayoshi), 'Ochroleuca,' and 'Tricolor' (Ezo-nishiki). First grown by Donckelaer and the second of the group to flower. Described in 1833 as remarkable for its leaves resembling 'Welbankiana.' The large white formal double flowers with sixty-five petals show tiered imbrication. Also listed as 'Candidissima Pink' in some records. Listed locally as 'c. Nittadissima' and registered as 'Candidissima.' Source: International Camellia Register.
