Margharita Coleoni Var.

Margharita Coleoni Var.
One of the most misspelled camellias in history — its pomegranate-red formal double has been listed under at least twenty orthographic errors since 1865.
First described in the Van Houtte Catalogue (1865–1866) as 'very bright, pomegranate red, numerous petals, well imbricated.' By 1879 Van Houtte called it a 'beautiful imbricated flower, rounded petals, of a beautiful rose, shaded with vivid carmine, all first class.' This enduring popularity has come with a cost: the name has been misspelled at least twenty ways, including 'Margaret Carbone,' 'Margarita Calcioni,' and 'Margharita Caleone,' among many others — arguably the most orthographically abused cultivar name in camellia history. Listed locally as 'Margharita Coleoni Var.' and registered as 'Margherita Coleoni.' Source: International Camellia Register.
