Imperator France

A grand Italian japonica from 1858 Rome whose identity was confused in America — brilliant red peony form with flesh-pink spots, early flowering.
Originated by Delgrande of Rome, Italy, and registered in 1858. The very large brilliant red peony-form flowers display flesh-pink spots, blooming early. The cultivar's history in America became confused when two other camellias were distributed under the same name, leading to the distinguishing labels 'Imperator (France)' and 'Imperator (US).' Known synonyms include 'Corrie Belle' and 'Big Daddy.' Has produced the sport 'Imperator Variegated.' Illustrated in Hertrich's Camellias. Listed locally as 'Imperator France.'
